Darley Mill Wheel turns again!

5th January 2010 00:00:00

Fantastic News!  £100,000 of investment and 11 months of painstaking restoration work by Northern Millwrights and the Environment Agency has breathed life back into our majestic water wheel.

The day of testing was a tense one, but to see the water cascade down to turn the wheel was poignant and exciting for everyone involved.

The work has included dredging more than 2000 tonnes of silt from the mill race, reinforcing the embankment, replacing 60 "buckets" on the wheel with new ones of English Elm, replacing worn bearings with new ones of phosphorus bronze and replacing rotten transomes with new ones of English Oak.

This momentous step takes us closer to our ultimate goal - to see the waterwheel generating electricity to power the Darley Mill Centre.
